Green Thumb Sunday: Making Use of Cold Weather

It doesn’t look like it, but this is some serious green thumb-ing going on here! E is making me a cold frame for my birthday! I’m helping by holding lumber while it is being cut, and then priming and painting the cut wood before E puts the frame together.

This is going to be an awesome cold frame for all of my new flowers and vegetable seeds from the Washington Gardener Seed Swap!

Monarch Chrysalis

A beautiful jade house with gold and black trim. It’s amazing how much the gold looks like real gold.

Peace One Day

A day late, but inspirational nonetheless. Be warned though, it’s a bit long.

Green Thumb Sunday: Kenilworth Gardens, DC

Columbine Sawfly

I wondered why one of my columbine disappeared overnight, and why the other ones had almost no leaves. Thanks to this article from Garden Gate magazine, I discovered what was going on and how to fix the problem.

As the article says, handpicking the caterpillars, using soap spray, or products like Dipel dust that contain Bacillus thuringiensis will work well for any other moth or butterfly larvae. This includes critters such as the sawfly, White Cabbage Moth caterpillars (Pieris rapae) and Tomato hornworms (Manduca quinquemaculata).

Now, I just need to figure out what is pooping on my Basil!
