Willy Porter
Mr. TE and I went to see one of my favorite musicians last night - Willy Porter. At first I was bummed, because he wasn’t the only act, but as it turned out, the opening act, Tony Furtado, was excellent as well.
Both are guitarists and I guess they are categorized as “folk” guitarists, but these guys are nothing like Pete Seeger. Not that Pete Seeger is bad, in fact I like Seeger a lot, but this ain’t yo mama’s folk music. It’s more like “Alternative” music, but it’s kind of something else. I’m not sure how to describe them.
The one thing I didn’t like about Willy’s performance, was that he was performing with a drummer. I really like Willy as a solo act, and he really doesn’t need any accompaniment. His music is so rich and wonderful, that accompaniment is like icing on the icing on the cake. The drummer was really interesting because he was using everyday, non-drum items as percussion instruments, but I felt that it was distracting me from why I was there. That said, I really enjoyed the show, and as always Willy plays the music that speaks what my heart is trying to say.
If you have the chance, check both of these guys out. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
