Don’t Take Your Lunch for Granted

Posted in Food, Local, Musings, Soapbox, Vent, lunch at 4:14 pm by trueepicure

I’m getting cranky in my “old” age. Maybe I’m just noticing inconsistency more these days. I don’t know. I just know I’m annoyed at the stupid political BS that runs rampant in this country.

There was a piece on NPR yesterday, talking about how Bush is sending a bunch of food aid to various developing countries. [I won't get into the fact that it would be better/faster/more efficient to send money rather than ship food.] It’s great that we are trying to be good world citizens (??) and help other countries in their time of need, without starting a war, but I wonder…

Urgh!

I almost hurled when I read this. I’m not sure which is worse, that the animals were treated so horribly, or that the meat went to school kids. Further proof that the meat industry needs to be cleaned up - literally.

I Got the Juice - and it Ain’t OJ!

Posted in Food, Musings, Wedding, lunch at 3:03 pm by trueepicure

We received a fruit and vegetable juicer as a wedding present. One of those things that I’ve always wanted, but felt guilty about buying for myself. I registered for it, and now we have one. I’m totally sold!

I should say that I am sold on the juice part. I’m not yet sure how much I like the juicer, but I’ll give it some time before I make a final decision. It’s a little bit awkward, but all of the parts are easy to clean, so it kind of balances out. Plus, the juice I made is SO good!

Today’s juice was:

1 Granny Smith apple
1 Honey Crisp apple
1 Carrot
1 thick slice of ginger

The recipe book says that you can throw everything in whole, but a) I don’t really want to juice the seeds into my glass, and b) the large apples won’t fit in the hopper, so I had to cut them into quarters. Not a bad deal, really, considering what came out. Delicious, sweet, tangy, spicy juice, with just a hint of carrot flavor. Enough for a 12oz glass (filled to the rim) of juice. A delicious, post-lunch treat. Yum!

Improving on Lunch

Posted in Food, Musings, lunch at 6:00 am by trueepicure

You may remember that I started carrying my lunch to work a while ago. I haven’t been carrying my Mr. Bento much recently, because I’ve been carrying sandwiches a lot. If I carry a sandwich, I typically carry it in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. Unfortunately, however, I haven’t found a good way to wrap my sandwich. I hate using Tupperware for sandwiches, partly because they take up too much room in my lunch bag. I prefer a more flexible “wrap” for my sandwiches, but I hate wasting resources by using aluminum foil or saran wrap. Paper towels aren’t much better in terms of resource waste, and they don’t hold up very well.

A couple of months ago, I read about a product called Wrap-N-Mat, that is a reusable sandwich wrap and place mat. I just ordered a couple and I’ll be sure to let you know how they work out.

Some other cool lunch gear:

*fancy insulated lunch bags
*reusable grocery bags/lunch totes
*hand-printed lunch bags
*Dumpling Lunch Cooler
*Frog (and Cat) Lunch bags made from recycled soda bottles

Please note: I’m not necessarily endorsing any particular product, I’m just sharing stuff I’ve found.
