Don’t try to read my mind, it’s scary in there.
When you have a food allergy, sometimes even the simplest things are not safe to eat. Many people are shocked when I tell them that I can’t eat something as seemingly benign as a lollipop or hard candy. Sadly, most candy is off-limits for me because of the corn syrup and/or the citric acid. I’m not sure if this is good or bad news (definitely bad for my teeth), but thanks to YummyEarth, I can now eat tasty, fruity lollipops, and you probably can too.
I’ve been calling bakeries all over town to try and find one that can accommodate my corn allergy. None of them were willing to take the chance that I might have a reaction to errant corn dust or something. I tried to explain that I wouldn’t have a problem unless the corn was IN the cake, but apparently when store owners hear “allergy”, what they really hear is “lawsuit”.
This time, armed with the phone number for the Hollin Hall Pastry Shop(recommended to me by several people), I found success! Part of my success was due to framing the issue a bit differently. Apparently “sensitivity” does not have the same danger associated with it, and some people are willing to think a bit more outside of the box than others.
Keep your fingers crossed that they don’t change their minds!
Several people have mentioned to me that they weren’t aware of how prevalent corn is in our daily lives. I tend to kind of brush it off and say “It’s in everything, you’d be amazed.” (Careful avoidance of pun) And really, you would be amazed if you looked at what you eat every day.
