Brussels Sprouts, That’s My Answer

Posted in Food, NaBloPoMo, Plants, Vegetable at 10:23 pm by trueepicure

That’s My Answer asks: Are there any vegetables that you just can’t eat?

Brussels sprouts. I *really* want to like them. Really I do. Everyone says: “you’ll like them the way I cook them” or “they taste like cabbage.” No, I really do NOT like them no matter how they’re cooked, and they do NOT taste like cabbage. I like cabbage. Heck, I even like spinach. I do not like Brussels sprouts.

The only redeeming part of Brussels sprouts, for me? The cool stalks. The weird spikey things are where the leaves were cut off. Supposedly you can eat the leaves like spinach. Spinach that tastes like Brussels sprouts. Feh.

I love Brussels Sprouts, but I feel the same way you do about raw tomatoes. They gross me out.

I’m crazy about them and it isn’t a holiday dinner if there isn’t a big bowl of them sauteed in browned butter and pancetta.

(I realize that all of that browned butter and pig fat sort of negates the healthy aspect of the green vegetable, but whatever)

Browned butter and pancetta would be one of the reasons that I REALLY want to like them. :D

That is about one of the only things that I can eat in moderation :-) A friend of mine told me he peels the individual leaves off of each sprout, lays them on a cookie sheet and brushes them with olive oil. He then sprinkles with parmesan and bakes them in the oven. Sounds like a lot of work, but he says they are really tasty.
