Weekend Food Recap

Posted in Food, Local, Local Food, NaBloPoMo, lunch at 10:58 pm by trueepicure

This weekend being a holiday meant large quantities of food shopping. Add to that, the fact that my mom came to visit, so it was an extra-special food extravaganza.

Thursday evening was our first Act, with a trip to Trader Joe’s. We stocked up on essentials, such as milk and bread (read: lots of buns for Friday’s hot dogs and hamburgers). We also found a lovely yellow watermelon, which turned out to be the tastiest, sweetest watermelon I’ve had in a while. Even one of our guests on Friday, who doesn’t particularly care for watermelon, said it was quite tasty. I have not a clue where the watermelon was from, but suffice it to say, I’ll be trying to grow yellow watermelon some time in the future.

Act Two was our rainy Friday night, spent digging into the usual Fourth of July feast. Hot dogs, burgers, and condiments, including Heinz Organic ketchup (no corn syrup!!), and some tasty grilled veggies from TJ’s filled the table to overflowing.

Saturday morning; Act Three: we braved the impending storm, and headed out to the Fall’s Church farmer’s market. We took a detour to enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the Original Pancake House, which is neither original nor a house, while we waited for the rain to stop, before heading to the market. All I’m going to say about that is “Apple Pancake”. Those of you who have been initiated, know of what I speak.

We’ve really enjoyed the Falls Church market for the last few weeks. First stop: treats for the pup at Chase Your Tail Bakery. Then we took a walk through the entire length of the market to survey the potential purchases. We ended up with some corn for Mom and E, some awesome eggplants (lovely and creamy when grilled) that the vendor couldn’t remember the name of, garlic, red and yellow grape tomatoes, eggs, pierogies, and some canteloupe. E also found some fantastic gazpacho that was weirdly creamy without the cream. I’m still trying to figure out what vegetable did that! And finally, a couple of pieces Buffalo London broil, which disappeared almost completely on Saturday night.

All in all, a fantastically food-filled weekend. Plus, we get to enjoy some pieces of the weekend through the week - tomatoes in my lunch today, challah roll for my sandwich, and watermelon for dessert tonight. Tomorrow is a London broil sandwich, with possibly some grilled zucchini on the side.

Bon appétit!

If I had to guess on the gazpacho I would say it was bread/bread crumbs? Any chance of that?

Original Pancake House…right across the street from where the Diggity used to get his hair did….all I have to say is Nutella Crepe (we had it for breakfast dessert once.)…oh, yeah and the apple pancake!…oh and the corned beef hash omelette!

and I would agree that the thickening agent in the gazpacho is probably breadcrumbs.
