Flor de Berenjena

Posted in Flowers, Gardening, Musings at 11:22 pm by trueepicure

What you have to understand about this picture, is that I only took it to see if I could actually take it. My eggplant has the most beautiful furry stems and leaves, and the flowers are a lovely shade of lavender. But they’re all pointing down, and the flowers are only a few inches from the ground! I shudder to think what it is going to be like, trying to keep the fruits from rotting. :(

Too bright, to be sure, but I took the picture with the camera turned over, underneath the picture, without being able to look at the potential image and no idea if it was actually in focus. Kinda neat. All of that said, I kind of like the other-worldly quality of this shot.

Ollas

Posted in Environment, Gardening, Plants at 3:36 pm by trueepicure

Ollas, Spanish for pots (pronounced oh-yas), are a brilliant, ancient irrigation technique. Check out the Urban Homestead and their step-by-step directions for using ollas. It sounds like they would work well in anything but sandy soil… I wonder how they would do in this ridiculous clay we have in our backyard?

(Thanks to Ravelry Green Thumbs Group for the heads up on these!)

Happiness in a Pot

It’s hard not to be happy when you’re looking at this face:

IMGP1262

It’s my Martha Washington Geranium, aka Regal Pelargonium. Bought it at Trader Joe’s a while a go. I thought it was going to die, but it just needed a bit of pruning and a little rain.

No More Men at Work

This is a pretty cool story. I must admit that it never occurred to me either.

I am a bit sad, though, that the band doesn’t exist any more.

Multitudinous hives = Benadryl and bed. :(

Why I Need to Start Carrying My Camera

Because otherwise, you get crap-ass photos like this on my blog:

Lime Tartlette

Plus, I saw many photo-worthy things on my walk today, but I didn’t have anything to capture them with. I didn’t even remember to bring my phone with me, so I had to wait to take my craptastic photo until I got back to my desk. [Sigh]

This weekend being a holiday meant large quantities of food shopping. Add to that, the fact that my mom came to visit, so it was an extra-special food extravaganza.

Sunday Supper

Posted in Food, Gardening, Local Food, Musings, NaBloPoMo at 9:13 pm by trueepicure

We had a delicious dinner tonight, courtesy of E’s fantastic cooking skills, the Falls Church Farmer’s Market, and our little garden. Sweet potato bisque (Trader Joe’s), fabulous goat cheese pierogies from… [Crap! I can't remember the name of the farm.] with onions and a mushroom mix, and cucumbers with red and yellow grape tomatoes.

The dressing for our cucumbers and tomato salad was made, in part, with herbs from our garden, which is very exciting for me. I love being able to use things from our garden. I can’t wait until the tomatoes are ready to eat!

Food Surfing

Seen today on Food Network:

Pomegranate Margaritas. I wish I liked margaritas, because this sounds really good. The reality is that I can’t stand Tequila or Triple Sec, so it’s not an option. It does give me ideas for yummy pomegranate summer slushes though.

BBQ short ribs and grilled pineapple, and Blackberry hand pies (can we say empanada?). Not sure what’s up with the cake flour, though.
