Little Boxes…

Posted in Food, Gadgets, Musings at 10:46 pm by trueepicure

I’m not a wine drinker, but I remember the days of boxed wine very well. It seemed like gallery openings in NYC in the late 80s were prime box wine venues. So here we are again, having come full circle.

Part of me thinks its a cool idea, and part of me thinks it’s completely practical (I imagine that the Parmalat-like containers would keep the wine “fresh” longer (through wine is not “fresh” by definition). Another part of me of me is horrified that wine boxes are back - juice boxes for adults? And what about the environmental impact?? I don’t think that packaging is recyclable! No way that’s a good idea.

So I ask you, dear readers: Wine in juice boxes: triumph or travesty?

Like anything there are positive and negatative points. In this case the clue word is in the article headline convience. Packaging wine in bladder bags and placing them in boxes (ie the bosed wines of the 80s) saved on overall packaging and weight (which helps reduce the oil usage in shipping) qne does allow the wine to remain airtight and therefore last longer before spoiling but the idea behind it was to sell larger quantities to the consumer. The tetra boxes can’t be easily recycled (at least they aren’t anywhere I have ever lived) because of the many layers of materials they use and they are smaller servings causing more packaging. And I am not sure how you would close up the larger containers — you can’t recork them. Once again the desposable society chooses convience over the environment.

hehe, there is a box of red and a box of white in the pantry especially for cooking. We had to switch. Using half a bottle of Toasted Head cab in the spaghetti sauce was getting spendy

I see these being very popular with teenage drinkers… There is something to be said for using these in cooking, but as far as serving at a party, I just can’t get my brain around it. Plus, I love the challenge of pulling the cork out the bottle in one piece :-)
