I’m Famous-ish!

The Harlot was here!

Check out the third and fourth pictures…

The Harlot was a blast, and I can’t wait to see her again. I have a picture with her, but I have to get the Photographer around here to work a little bit of magic to make it so I don’t look like quite so much of a psycho.

T-15 and Counting…

Yeah, the whole blogging every day thing kind of hasn’t worked out for me. Not with trying to plan a wedding. :( I’m just trying to stay sane these days. Once this craziness is over, back to the every day blogging!

For today, I leave you with a little bit of planty-ness.

Dirty Jobs

Posted in Musings at 10:36 pm by trueepicure

I’m watching the retrospective of the Discovery Channel show “Dirty Jobs” right now. It is a great show, and it falls into the category of “trainwreck television” - you know, where you know you shouldn’t watch, but you can’t turn away. Yeah, it’s like that.

Red Rocks

'Sedona' Coleus and some other unnamed Coleus

A botanic reminder of the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. The young leaves are more the color of the rocks, but the orange leaves make me think of Arizona sunsets.

A little eye candy for your viewing pleasure…

'Blackie'

Flowers from the potted Ipomoea batatas ‘Blackie’ on our front stoop. I couldn’t ever get these to last very long in Tempe, but it’s growing like nuts here! Thank goodness for moisture.

Wooooo…

Posted in Musings at 10:45 pm by trueepicure

I fell asleep writing a blog post last night. I’m probably going to fall asleep tonight… but DUDE, I got the first issue of Interweave Crochet tonight, and I’m so psyched. The cover sweater, the Rosemary Sweater, is GORGEOUS, and I am totally going to have to make it.

There seems to be some discrepancy between the yarn description in the pattern and what I find online when I look up the KidLin. I’ll have to check to see which is right. I hope I don’t really need 10 skeins, because $120 is just a little bit much for me at the moment.

Go Kim! Great work on the first issue!

Seltzer

Posted in Musings at 8:55 pm by trueepicure

Those of you who have grown up on the East Coast will probably be familiar with seltzer water as a common drink mixer/bar staple. For those of you wondering what the difference between seltzer and club soda is: seltzer is carbonated water, and club soda is carbonated water that can have any number of additives, including sodium.

All of my life, seltzer water has been a staple in our house, not so much as an ingredient in alcoholic drinks, but as a drink on its own or mixed with juice. It’s my preferred form of water. Since I can’t drink sodas like Coke or Pepsi any longer, seltzer sates my need for carbonated drinks.

I’m sure that I should cut down on the carbonation since it probably isn’t really very good for my bones. I’ve heard that it can break down calcium in the body. But a girl’s gotta have some vices, right?

This blogging every day thing hasn’t been working so well for me lately. So many reasons why, but I need to stick to it.

I had a lot of shopping to do this weekend, partly for the honeymoon (Shorts, people! Get your minds out of the gutter), and for the rehearsal dinner. I found a great dress at Ann Taylor Loft for 60% off. It’s cream colored “lace” with navy trim. It sounds odd, but it looks good, and it kind of keeps with the wedding theme, without being a wedding dress.

I also found some jeans at Sears - Land’s End finally has some good pants that I can’t wear. I like it that Sears carries Land’s End clothing so I can try it on before buying. I have such a hard time figuring out what to order from them because the sizing is proportioned differently than other clothing stores - probably because the clothes are closer to real people sizes.

Office organization stuff was also purchased, and I need to get that stuff out of the car before I forget. LOVE buying office organization stuff. :)

Muppets!

Posted in Musings at 11:57 pm by trueepicure

The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Jim Henson Legacy will be displaying 100 pieces of Muppet history. The exhibit will start this November in Little Rock, AR, head to Mesa, AZ and travel to a number of really great institutions across the country over the next three years. It’s expected to hit DC at some point during the three year trip, so you KNOW I’ll be keeping an eye out.

Local…

Posted in Local, Musings, Soapbox at 11:48 pm by trueepicure

I think a lot about local food, as you’ve no doubt gathered if you’ve read my blog for any length of time. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot more about local everything, considering the news that’s been brewing (boiling over) about toys and other goods made in China. There is a longer post here than I have time for at the moment, but I just wanted to share a thought that keeps popping into my head lately:

Why are we so surprised that we’re finding that there are all of these problems with paint and parts of toys (and I’m sure other goods) that are made in China, for example?

U.S. companies have outsourced production to other countries to save money. The production is outsourced to companies (contractors) in countries where quality standards are different and/or not enforced. These contractors have to bid low to get the contract, so they have to find ways to cut costs to meet the contract price(s)… it goes on and on. So I ask again: why are we so surprised that Mattel keeps having to recall toys because of lead paint? (Not to single out Mattel on purpose, but they are a prime example of late.) What food product are we going to find out has lead/chemicals/inorganic materials in it? What products from which country are going to be next?

Are we going to start to realize that the only way to really control what is being done to produce goods for U.S. consumption, is to produce them here? It’ll cost more, but maybe it’s worth it? But would we do any better by our own workers - providing benefits and such? I don’t have any of the answers, but I sure have lots of questions. And more keep popping into my mind. I think it’s time to go to bed. :)
