Stranger than Fiction

I stopped by Grand Market today to pick up some cilantro, parsley, and limes. For those of you in Phoenix, Grand Market is a bit like Lee Lee in Chandler. Big box store that used to be something else, turned ethnic market extraordinaire. I was roaming through the produce and checking out all the great stuff like hairy squash (seriously! It’s got fuzz on it!) and the tiniest cucumbers (or something like them) I’ve ever seen, that were about the size of a really big multivitamin; my eye was caught by a watercress-like bit of green. It wasn’t so much what it looked like, but what the label said. Apparently this stuff is called “methleaf”. Methleaf?! What the..? Has anyone heard of this? I tried googling it, but nothing came back except for a whole bunch of entries for methamphetamine substance abuse treatment centers.

Please, Blogland, help me! I need to know what this is and how to use it! Comments are appreciated.

  • It's a great thing to be able to buy fresh Methi at Grandmart! Methi leaf is the greens from the fenugreek plant. It's used in North Indian cooking. It's great fried with potatoes. It's also used dried as an herb. Fenugreek seeds have a similar but more bitter flavor. The seeds are one of the ingredients that give "curry powder" it's distinct flavor. BTW most Indians don't use "curry powder" in their cooking. Here is good recipe for potatoes with fenugreek greens , but if you google "aloo methi" you can find lots more. http://tinyurl.com/6b2uja
