Another year older and wiser? I don’t know about that, but I’m definitely more tired.
I don’t really have that much to say, so I’ll leave you with some interesting things that have happened on my birthday in years past:
1561 - Sir Francis Bacon, English philosopher was born (He died in 1626).
1949 - Steve Perry of “Oh Sherrie” fame is born.
1973 - The Supreme Court of the United States delivers its decision in Roe v. Wade striking down state laws restricting abortion during the first six months of pregnancy.
1984 - The Apple Macintosh, the first consumer computer to popularize the computer mouse and the graphical user interface, is introduced during Super Bowl XVIII with its famous “1984″ television commercial.
1997 - Madeleine Albright becomes the first female secretary of state after confirmation by the United States Senate.
I had a wonderful dinner with E and my mom this weekend to celebrate the day, and I’m going to have a really bad-for-me-good-for-my-psyche dessert tonight. Yeeha!

Those of you familiar with New York City know about SoHo (South of Houston Street) and NoHo (North of Houston, or North Hollywood if you’re on the Left Coast). NoLita (North of Little Italy, is south of NoHo, but east of SoHo. But don’t confuse New York’s SoHo with London’s Soho.
I know about BoHo (The area of Manhattan surrounding the Bowery south of Houston Street), and a longtime friend grew up in TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal Street). Other neighborhood rebranding attempts/successes include: BoCoCa and DUMBO in Brooklyn, and SoBro (South Bronx). But have you heard about FroNo?
Yeah, I didn’t think so. I just made it up this morning. FroNo = Frozen Nose; that wonderfully horrible feeling when you step out of the house, into 35 degree weather and your nose hairs tingle because they are frozen into mini-icicles. YESSSS!

I was just over at USA Today checking out the latest installment in the “Young and in Debt” series (this week’s is about insurance), and I saw this. All I can say is, “Wow!”

Anyone else out there trying to figure out what they want to do when they “grow up”? I’ve got a great job, one that is interesting, fast paced, and has a lot of potential for growth. I get to work on really interesting projects that tend to be first-of-their-kind projects. And you know what? I don’t see myself doing this forever. I’m making pretty good money, but I’m not sure what I’m getting out of it.
I thought it was just me, but I keep seeing articles about people in their thirties (and beyond) who are searching for the meaning of life, and the meaning of what they do for a living. Money is great, but unfortunately (or fortunately) that doesn’t help me get out of bed in the morning - not really. Paying the bills is great, and makes for less stress at home, but I don’t know that the stress of work is worth it, without some kind of personal investment (other than my home life).
How do you make the job/life balance work?

With a new year starting, I’ve been thinking about all the things I did in the past year, and what the new year will bring.
In the past year, I got promoted, got engaged, moved across the country, got a new job. (Phew! Written out like that, it makes me realize just how packed with life changing events last year was.) It makes me wonder what this year will be like… Our wedding is planned for this year, so I know that will be a big event, but I wonder what other things will happen? Will we buy a house? Will I figure out what I want to do when I grow up? (That’s a post all of it’s own.
) The idea of so many unknowns is daunting and liberating, all at the same time.
Happy New Year!
