I’m way overdue for an update on the adventures in DC. Sorry folks, but it’s been a crazy last few weeks.
We arrived in Virginia on June 30th, and stayed with our wonderful, patient friends, who generously put us up for the night. We knew we’d arrive late on Friday, and our apartment leasing office wouldn’t be open until the next day. So we planned to stay with A and L for the night. After a long 3 1/2 days in the car, it was wonderful to know that we could crash in their back room and get up the next day in a lesiurely fashion (instead of getting up at the crack ‘o dawn).
We happily woke up the next morning, and headed out to IHOP for a thank you breakfast (and no, I can’t eat the pancakes unless I bring my own syrup). At around 11:30 E and I headed over to the Encore Apartments to sign our lease and pick up the keys to our furnished apartment.
I should mention that we received no less than four emails from the leasing manager at the Encore, telling us that our apartment was ready, assuring us that everything, including our rental furniture, was in place.
When we arrived at the leasing office, the leasing manager wasn’t there. That should have been our first clue that things weren’t going to go well for us. The woman who was there was the assistant manager, but it turns out that she had only been with the company for two weeks. Maybe it was four, but regardless, she didn’t have the foggiest notion what she was doing.

Green!
This is from the last day of the Great Migration. We’re in Virginia at this point, so we’re pretty close to the end.
Every time I would visit home during my 10 years in Arizona, I was always amazed at how GREEN everything is. Arizona has green too, contrary to popular belief, but it is a completely different desert green (not counting all the imported species). A beautiful desert green, but nothing like the East Coast.
I’m so used to the landscaped rock and plant highways of Phoenix, that I had forgotten what it’s like out here, where the Right of Way is a tangle of trees, bushes, flowers, and whatever else happens to decide to grow. Highway weed control must be a completely different issue out here.
Gardening is going to be so different here. I grew up seeing gardens like everyone has here, but I’ve never actually gardened in this climate. I’ve been a desert dweller for so long, I hope I don’t kill everything.
I leave you with the esteemed words of Kermit the Frog.
It’s not that easy bein’ green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold-
or something much more colorful like that.
It’s not easy bein’ green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over ’cause you’re not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water- or stars in the sky.
But green’s the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why? Wonder,
I am green and it’ll do fine, it’s beautiful!
And I think it’s what I want to be.

I plan to get some more posts and pictures up this weekend, but I wanted to let my readers know that we arrived safely in DC/Northern VA. Our apartment isn’t ready (even after they assured us that everything was ready - at least 4 times before we left), so we’re staying with friends until we figure things out. Just a little additional adventure.
More pictures and whatnot soon.
