Eat Local Challenge, 2006
A Recipe for a Challenge
Add together:
Urban sprawl and a job with long hours stir and bake at 100+ degree temperatures in May. |

Not an ideal situation for attempting to eat locally in Phoenix, and yet, I signed up for the challenge. Literally.
Last year I participated in the Eat Local Challenge initiated by the Locavores, and brought to blog land by Jen of Life Begins at 30. Liz got the knitters organized, and I embarked on a journey that has strengthened my convictions about community and place.
This year, I’ve joined Jen again, for more local food blogging. This time, the Eat Local Challenge will be different for me. I’ve decided that my Personal Challege will focus on local, independent restaurants. I will continue to follow the Locavore Pledge, but my blogging focus will center on independent restaurants (and shops), and the politics of being an independent, in a world that has such a corporate focus.
My goal is to make this a year-round project, and with all the life-changing events going on, I hope my local food posts are a regular event around here.

That’s a fabulous plan. I have found that if I didn’t have a garden and put up a lot of food from it each summer, that there would be no way I could really do the ELC in May…. there aren’t too many options in Maine.
Great engagement story! I love how E looks so calm, although he had just bedecked a crustacean with gemstones!
Congratulations to you both.

I think that is wonderful. People look at political change like weight loss — it’s such a big problem, they don’t know where to start. Rather than taking a flying leap into the deep end of dieting, you’d do yourself a world of good to simply give up soda, or sugary cereal. Same goes for food production. If we just incorporate a few simple changes into our buying patterns, we’ll do the world a world of good.
Bravo!

I’ve been trying to choose independent restaurants when we eat out and usually we are really happy with our choices. After reading about how much fuel it takes to get a tomato from Florida to Arizona, I was horrified. I wish, though, that eating locally was easier.

Try Pizzeria Bianco - all locally grown ingredients, and the best pizza you’ve every tasted!

HI! I really prefer independent restaurants too. I hate all the chains. I went to culinary school by the way! I am glad you are going to review some. I think I am going to make that my goal for this year too. To try to only go to independents when i can! Lisa

Hi!
I’m moving from Portland, OR to Phoenix. Talk about a challenge! What!? I don’t even know where to start!
