By all accounts, I am reasonably smart. I’ve got a couple of degrees under my belt, I read a lot, and I listen to NPR. But for someone with smarts, I can be a real dope sometimes.

Ed ordered lobster from Maine on Wednesday. Not terribly out of the blue, since we had planned to have a lobster dinner a few months ago, and because of some bad weather on the East Coast, it had been cancelled. He asked if I wanted to have a date on Saturday, and who am I to turn down a lobster dinner?

Saturday started out as a pretty normal day. The lobster arrived at 10:30 via FedEx. Yippie! Lobster for dinner! We continued the day with a host of errands and arrived home in the late afternoon after picking up a few last things at the grocery store. I planned to make some cupcakes and got started on them soon after arriving home. (More on those later.) I cleaned up my cupcake mess as much as possible, and I left the kitchen to allow E space to begin seafood prep.

Fast forward to dinner.
Dinner is Served

We’d eaten all of the crab claws by the time the camera came out, but the mussels lasted a few extra minutes. Mussels in white wine broth, yum!

Mussels

(Me, snarfing up the last of the mussels.)

I think that lobster bibs should be considered high fashion. I mean, c’mon.

High Fashion

All this time, I’m having a great old time, drinking hard cider (not always safe for corn allergy sufferers. Watch out for unnecessary caramel color in your cider - I found out the hard way.), goofing with E, and making all kinds of crazy jokes about shellfish. I’m completely having a great time, and I’m not thinking anything except that I’m eating a great meal.

E came out of the kitchen to alert me that dinner was about to be served.

Cracking a Knuckle

(Mister Jokester trying to crack a knuckle. Ha, ha.)

Dinner is served!

Ed Serves...

Click, click, TrueEpicure the Photographer, completely oblivious to everything. Why is E kneeling down holding the tray? Click cli–… Uh… what is on the lobster?

The Well Dressed Lobster

Hey, that lobster is wearing jewelry!

What's That Lobster Wearing?

Holy Crap!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, I am completely oblivious. All the signs were there, and I never put any of them together.

IMGP0555

I’m not going to win any awards for my handmodeling, but the ring looks pretty darned good, doncha think?

The Ring

Ed did a super job with the ring. It’s my something old and something new. :)

Mom is pretty excited - not more than I am, but pretty close, I think. :)

Calling Mom

So there you are. That is my story of oblivousness and indulgence. Boy, what a great night!

When we least expect it, huh? Sometimes it’s just nice to know that we still have the capacity to be surprised.
Congratulations! And to continue the aquaeous theme: Look’s like you reeled in a good catch.
