Just in case you didn’t think I was geeky enough, E has enabled me futher to be able to do mobile posting. No posting by cell phone for me! E has a wireless card that works nationally, a laptop, and tiny but extremely high quality camera. So what do I do? I blog in the car!!

We’re on our way to Philadelphia after spending the day in DC (and surrounding suburbs). We had breakfast with my cousin, lunch and coffee with some friends, and stayed overnight with more friends/family. Tomorrow we celebrate E’s cousin’s receiving her doctorate.
So, that’s my weekend, and I leave you with a picture of salt mountains (I guess the winter was not as snowy as it’s been in the past):

And a slightly blurry picture of E driving me north on I-95 in Maryland:

That’s all for now!

At the end of the fourth book in the Thursday Next series, Something Rotten, Thursday comments to the reader:
I learned from my own fathers death many years ago that the end of one’s life and dying are two very different things indeed…
So very true. I learned that tonight. My dad died 5 years ago, and I spent 4 hours with his high school classmates, learning so much about his life before me, and that his legacy will continue on long after I am gone.
Dad’s classmates helped to build a section in the library in my father’s honor. They raised a large amount of money to help the library buy books on subjects related to my father and subjects that he would have enjoyed reading about. For someone who loved books, his high school and his high school mates, it was just about the highest honor anyone could have given him.
The current principal, librarian, the student council president (cute kid - was I that young in high school??), and a host of staff members attended, along with about 30 members of the class of 1949. I cried through almost my entire 5 minute speech. I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t even realize it was happening, until I couldn’t speak anymore. It was a wonderful event.
Thursday Next is right, death is not the same as the end of life. Dad will always be in our hearts and on the bookshelf. The end of his life will come many years after we all are gone.

A gorgeous day today in New York City. I spend most of the day, walking around, not being terribly productive at anything, except enjoying some of the gorgeous spring that we’re having here. I say “we’re” like I still live here… I guess you can take the girl out of NYC, but you can’t take the NYC out of the girl.
Lots of gorgeous flowers blooming. For those who think New York City is just a giant concrete slab, feast your eyes on this:

These are the biggest Hydrangea I’ve ever seen. They are half the size of the tire next to them - huge, I tell you!
I will leave you with a picture of my last stop of the day, Pasticceria Bruno on Bleeker Street in the Village. Yum!

(Just in case you’re wondering, I did take off the icing (came off scarily easily) before eating. I didn’t want to possibly poison myself with cornstarch. I had to leave it for the photo, though. Too pretty to leave out.)

Some days, I can’t believe how crazy things have been lately. My trip to Columbus was 3 weeks ago! That was craziness in and of itself, because I had to give a presentation. I was able to get a bit of walking in, and some gorgeous pictures of croci that I shared in my last post. I miss cities where walking is easy, and it isn’t 500,000,000 degrees outdoors in April.
I’ve spend the better part of 6 months procrastinating about writing a history of my dad’s life for the memorial dedication at his high school library this week. I’m not sure if I was procrastinating because this is what I always do with a writing assignment, or if it was because I’m still greiving my dad’s death, and I just don’t know it. Probably a bit of both. I finally finished the bio last week, and it turned out really nicely.
I’m going to visit with a teacher of mine from grade school this week. He started as a new teacher of my 6th grade science class, and is now the director of the school. We’ve both come a long way in the last twenty-something years. Kind of strange to think back to those days… I’m really looking forward to the meeting — PK was one of my favorite teachers.
I’m rambling, and I think I need to head off to bed. I just thought I’d post a bit about what’s been going on, for those of you who are interested. My email is hosed by the way, so if you want to reach me, try me at trueepicure [at] gmail [dot] com, until further notice. You know what to replace.
Some flower eye candy for you to enjoy:

(taken by True Epicure in Columbus, Ohio)
I went looking for an online dictionary to confirm my suspicion that the plural of Crocus is Croci. It’s kind of a fascinating word, Crocus:
From the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.:
crocus
SYLLABICATION: cro·cus
PRONUNCIATION: krks
NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. cro·cus·es or cro·ci (-s, -k)
1a. Any of various perennial Eurasian herbs of the genus Crocus, having grasslike leaves and showy, variously colored flowers.
b. Any of several other plants, such as the autumn crocus.
2. A grayish to light reddish purple.
3. A dark red powdered variety of iron oxide, Fe2O3, used as an abrasive for polishing.
4. A coarse, loosely woven material like burlap, once used to make sacks for shipping saffron. See “gunnysack”.
ETYMOLOGY: Middle English, saffron, from Old French, from Latin, from Greek krokos; akin to perhaps from a source akin to Arabic kurkum, saffron.
I don’t think of Croci as herbs, but of course they are! Duh, me!

It’s been a while, I know. I have all kinds of posts started, but no time to finish them of late.
In the meantime, I leave you with a picture of the latest loveliness to bloom in my garden:
