I finally figured out why my hands get so danged dry when I garden. It’s our stupid CLAY soil! Mudpacks for oily skin huh? Come to the desert and try a little soil. :D

You Know You’re From New York City When…

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:15 pm by trueepicure

(Just a few lines from BlogThings)

You say “the city” and expect everyone to know that this means Manhattan.

You have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.

You can get into a four-hour argument about how to get from Columbus Circle to Battery Park at 3:30 on the Friday before a long weekend, but can’t find Wisconsin on a map.

The subway makes sense.

Crazy Crafty… Again

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:58 pm by trueepicure

I’m going all crazy crafty again. I think the light at the end of the degree tunnel is giving me a false sense of freedom.

Mom bought me a new sewing machine when she visited me in November. I’d finally had enough of my old one that I’d purchased while in college. (Moment of silence for the 3000 lb machine that Jen and I dragged home from Rosedale (?). I gave the machine to a deserving home (I think) through FreeCycle Phoenix.

I’m currently about 90% done with J’s afghan. Pics soon, I hope.

I found this crazy yarn at Michael’s, called “Matrix“. When I saw it, I knew I had to have it. When I started working with it, I almost threw it out of the window. It is unlike any yarn I have ever used (though I am really a newbie at crocheting, even though I’ve been doing it for years). It’s a ladder yard, which means that it is like crocheting with two strands of super slippery yarn at once that keeps getting snagged by the needle. Now that I am getting used to it, I kind of like it. I’m using “Browser Blue” for the skinny scarf (the short one, 1 ball), and I am thinking about one of the shawls. So much yarn, so little time.

I’m dreaming of turning the garage into a dyeing studio…

What Was

I was going to watch a movie tonight… but I watched television instead. I sat on the couch and crocheted and read seed catalogs and Sunset Magazine. Being out of school rocks!

The Kite Runner

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:36 pm by trueepicure

I read The Kite Runner on the plane from JFK to LV today. I cried the whole way through. It was so sad and tragic, but I just couldn’t put it down. Mom was right, it is a wonderful book. I wanted the sadness to be over, but I didn’t want the book to end.

Assuming that it is pretty close to what it was like to grow up in Afghanistan, we have no idea here, of the truth about war and poverty. No idea.

More Rain!

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:22 pm by trueepicure

It rained while I was away. I’m glad it did because I was afraid my little plants were going to croak. And it just started raining again.

I love that sound.

I forget how much I like rain… the desert makes me realize how much I miss the sound of rain on the concrete. I used to lie in bed at night, listening to the rain come down on the ground and on the steps outside my bedroom. A soothing sound.

I think I’ll go read about some seeds for a while.

Back to the Valley of the Sun

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:14 pm by trueepicure

I finally got back to Phoenix today, after traveling for some 26 hours. I cried at least once during the trip, and that means it was BAD! I never cry, which is probably bad in and of itself, but the fact that I did is an indicator of the heineousness of the day(s).

Got stuck at JFK for 8 hours.
Had to get a cab back to mom’s at 11:30 last night.
Got told all of the wrong info.
Tried to call the 800# and got nowhere.
Didn’t have a seat this morning (though I did get to sit in First Class from JFK to Las Vegas.

And now I go back to work for a day before New Year’s Day.

Pleggh!

Got these in an email today. Too funny! Too sad!

Q: What is the difference between the Vietnam War and the Iraq War?

A: George W. Bush had a plan to get out of the Vietnam War

Freedom is near

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:00 pm by trueepicure

3 days until the end of the semester. I have to make a list of things to do… or not. Maybe I will just live on the edge!! It will be so nice to get back to gardening, even if it is only for a little while. :D
